This is The “back patch”-album. The album, which is perhaps the most legendary picture on the cover. On this album the song titles are not important, I don’t even remember them in order. This is an entity with a capital E.
Master Of Puppets has a sound 80’s metal. The same sound is set the standard of thrash metal. Production is in fact a deadly tough.
Playing was so strict at that time. They have had probably some gigs in those days. The songs have clever breaks, ultimate sawing and fine slowdowns as though Disposable Heroes. James Hetfield already knows how to sing, Lars Ulrich plays so hard that he could, bass and guitar makes what is needed.
The lyrics are applied for the right phrases, the correct positions. Rhythms and adhesion is like sticky flypaper. Otherwise, the content can be a bit empty, but it’s how they are arranged. It works.

The band has always been more than the sum of its parts. There is a charisma in the band and I think most in Hetfield’s person. No one in the band has ever been "the world's best player". Not even Cliff Burton. Burton's compositions always talked about, but even in this album, he made compositions only in the three songs. Sure, the person's participation would be otherwise able to be seen and heard in the band's albums. I think the band's best stuff is made about the time when Burton has been involved. Was he the mastermind, is quite a different matter. I’m sorry, but the Orion's bass patterns aren’t so wonderful.
This is a thrash-metal classic. So hard, that it must be listened to at least once. And as a bonus: The best songs to play with a tennis racket: The Thing That Should Not Be, Disposable Heroes, Damage, Inc.

Tämä on se selkälippulevy. Levy, jossa on se ehkä legendaarisin kuva kannessa. Tällä levyllä kappaleiden nimet eivät ole tärkeitä, en muista niitä vieläkään järjestyksessä. Tämä on kokonaisuus isolla K:lla.
Master of Puppetsissa on oman aikansa soundi. Sama soundi on määrittänyt thrash-metallia lähes näihin päiviin asti. Tuotanto on nimittäin tappavan kova.
Soitto oli Metallicalla tuolloin niin tiukkaa, että hirvittää. Siellä on luultavasti myös keikkailtu jonkin verran. Kappaleissa on ovelia taukoja, kunnon sahausta ja hienoja hidastuksia kuten vaikka Disposable Heroesissa. James Hetfield osaa jo laulaa, Lars Ulrich soittaa sen mihin taitojensa rajoissa pystyy, basso ja kitara tekevät tarvittavan.
Lyriikoissa on osattu hakea oikeat fraasit oikeisiin kohtiin. Rytmitykset ja tarttuvuus on kuin kärpäspaperia. Muuten sisältö voi olla vähän tyhjänlainen, mutta se miten ne on sovitettu, toimii.
”Bändin parhaat jutut on tehty suunnilleen aikana, kun Burton on mukana ollut. Mutta onko kaikki hänen ansiotaan, on ihan eri asia.”
Bändi on aina ollut enemmän kuin osiensa summa. Karismaa bändissä on ja mielestäni eniten juuri Hetfieldissä. Kukaan bändissä ei ole koskaan ollut ”maailman paras soittaja”. Ei edes Cliff Burton. Burtonin sävellyksistä aina puhutaan, mutta ei hän tälläkään levyllä ole osallistunut kuin kolmen biisin sävellykseen. Toki henkilön mukanaolo on muuten voinut näkyä ja kuulua bändin aikaansaannoksissa. Minusta bändin parhaat jutut on tehty suunnilleen aikana, kun Burton on mukana ollut. Mutta onko kaikki hänen ansiotaan, on ihan eri asia. Ei ne Orionin bassokuviot NIIN ihmeellisiä ole.
On tämä thrash-metalliklassikko. Niin kova, että se tulee kuunnella vähintään kerran. Ja vielä erityislistauksena albumin parhaat tennismailabiisit: The Thing That Should Not Be, Disposable Heroes, Damage, Inc.
