This is one of the albums, which could get to the list only because of the influence to my listening habits. This is one of the albums, which we’re played on the granny's old couch with wooden tennis rackets.
The album history is familiar to many. Although Cliff Burton died, was the songs of this albums still Metallica-songs, at least what I personally consider the only true Metallica. In fact, the compositions are catchy. They may not have as many variations of the melody, but the rhythms and structures are resourceful. The songs are complex, original and made with attitude. And especially played with attitude.
The album is marked by Jason Newsted’s bass lines from somewhere underground. Mixing and sounds are pretty sub-standard compared to previous albums. Bass cannot be heard just about anywhere and drum sounds are quite strange. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich said that this is what was wanted. But despite that, the mix just sucks. No can do. I still don’t think this would be any better with better sound quality.
There’s Justitia on the cover, the goddess of justice. The album name is formed from the last verse of the Pledge of Allegiance. During 80’s, especially thrash bands were often very critical towards society. In contrast to the glam rock bands, thrash bands had to be in "serious". However, I personally prefer the white colour of cover art, which is always a rare colour among the metal albums.

The album is rather cheerless in contrast to previous, which is, of course, natural when band's nicest, most talented and most creative dude is out of the picture. There’s no humour in the any song. If Kill'em All had been made from the authors youthful enthusiasm, Ride the Lightning from the developing playing skills and Master of Puppets from heaviness and popularity, this record has made by the strength of the depression and the dismal state. Probably also by the chemical industry.
The songs were difficult even for the tennis racket player. The band itself has said that playing the album is really challenging. Just because of this difficulty, this is the main Metallica-album for me. This album has started all interest of progressive and unpredictability.
As my 4-year-old girl when he first time hear it: "Daddy, this is kinda rough. I wonder if these players busy?" Still hers head shaken and she smiled. There must be something.
THE BEST MOMENTS
Dyers Eve – It’s still one of the best songs of Metallica. Rarely played live, but I don’t believe that Lars' legs to make it well any longer.
NOT SO BRILLIANT
One – In fact, I think it’s the weakest track on the album. Of course, it’s most pop, but others are better.

Tämä on niitä levyjä, joka listalle pääsisi jo pelkästään sen omaan musiikinkuunteluun tekemän vaikutuksen takia. Tämä on niitä levyjä, joita soitettiin mummolan sohvalla vanhoilla, puisilla tennismailoilla. Tämä on silti myös niitä levyjä, jotka muistan hyvänä, mutta joiden kappaleista en juuri mitään muista, ennen kuin ne soivat.
Levyn historia on monille tuttua huttua. Vaikka Cliff Burton kuoli, oli tämän levyn biisit vielä sitä Metallicaa, mitä ainakin itse pidän ainoana oikeana Metallicana. Itse sävellykset ovat tarttuvia. Niissä ei ehkä ole niin paljon melodiavaihteluita, mutta rytmitykset ja rakenteet ovat kekseliäitä. Biisit ovat monisyisiä, omaperäisiä ja asenteella tehtyjä. Ja varsinkin asenteella soitettuja.
Levyä leimaavat Jason Newstedin alle jäävät bassolinjat. Miksaus ja soundit ovat aika alaluokkaisia verrattuna edellisiin levyihin. Basso ei kuulu juuri missään ja rumpusoundit ovat melkoisen outoja. James Hetfield ja Lars Ulrich väittivät aikoinaan, että tätä levyltä oli lähdettykin hakemaan. Mutta siitä huolimatta miksaus vain kusee. Ei voi mitään. En silti usko, että tämä tuntuisi yhtään sen paremmalta ns. paremmilla soundeilla.
Kansitaiteeseen on kuvattu Justitia, oikeuden jumalatar. Levyn nimihän muodostuu USA:n lippulaulun viimeisestä säkeestä. Tuona aikana varsinkin thrash-bändit olivat usein kovin yhteiskuntakriittisiä. Toisin kuin glam rock-bändit, piti thrashissa olla "tosissaan". Itse kuitenkin pidän levyn valkoisesta väristä, joka on aina harvinaista metallialbumeissa.
"Yhdessäkään kappaleessa ei ole huumorin hiventäkään."
Levy on aiemmista poiketen kuitenkin melko iloton, mikä nyt tietysti onkin luonnollista, kun bändin mukavin, lahjakkain ja luovin jätkä on pois kuvioista. Yhdessäkään kappaleessa ei ole huumorin hiventäkään. Jos Kill'em All poiki tekijöidensä nuoruuden innosta, Ride the Lightning soittotaidon kehittymisestä ja Master of Puppets raskaudesta ja suosiosta, on tämä levy saanut voimansa depressiosta ja alakulosta. Varmaan myös kemian teollisuudesta.
Biisit vaativat aikoinaan paljon jo pelkän tennismailan soittajalta. Bändi on itsekin sanonut, että levyn läpisoittaminen on todella haastavaa. Juuri tämän vaikeuden takia tämä on minulle, kikkailufriikille, tärkein Metallica-albumi. Täältä se kaikki progressiivisuuteen ja ennalta-arvaamattomuuteen liittyvä ihailu on peräisin.
Kuten 4,5v tyttöni totesi tätä ensi kertaa kuullessaan: ”Isi, tämä on jotenkin rajua. Onkohan näillä soittajilla kiire?” Silti pää hytkyi mukavasti tahdissa. Tässä siis täytyy olla jotain.
PARHAAT HETKET
Dyers Eve – On edelleen yksi Metallican parhaista biiseistä. Harvoin livenä soitettu, mutta ei taida Larsin jalat siihen ehtiä enää.
EI LÄHDE
One – Itse pidän levyn heikoimpana kappaleena. Toki se on eniten pop, mutta muut ovat parempia.
