Girls in Their Summer Clothes broughts me always back to the end of spring, beginning of the summer and above all midsummer of 2010. The material from Magic is largely based on the political state of the United States and the dissatisfaction on the administration of George W. Bush’s. However, there’s a song like this in the middle of it all which in it’s gentleness immediately stood out in my years. That happened to someone else as well: this song won the Grammy Award for best rock song in 2009 and was named as a candidate for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance.
The sounds of the Magic-album have already been discussed with Radio Nowhere on place 47. Girls in Their Summer Clothes isn’t as jam-packed as buzzing Radio Nowhere: in this song the string section especially finds it’s place. There’s strong echos from the 60’s in the vocal melody and the section starting with the words “Frankie’s diner” is an exciting deviation from the song’s structure.
In a certain way Springsteen’s lyrics on this song go back to his material from the 1970s. There’s not a lot going on and the narrator describes the scenes with details. The scenery of the sun setting behind a small city can be seen in your mind from the first line. The street lights shine, lovers walk by, the wind blows.

A boy’s ball bounces from the eaves of a street light, bank’s clock shines and the porch lights go off. You could paint a painting with this information. The city is alive, however, and the narrator says that he’s been through tough times but things are beginning to find their way. What has happened?

What follows is the section jumping into surprising chords. A restaurant owned by a friend called Frankie gives some consolation. “Fluorescent” is one heck of a word to put into a pop song. Even the waitress Shaniqua sees that our man doesn’t do very well: she wants to hear what’s wrong and our narrator starts a story: a woman is gone and made a wound in his heart. Now his walking around the city in which “the girls in their summer clothes pass me by”. Just a look could save a lot.
There’s a great chord being played just before the word ”glance” in the end of the last verse…
This song has been vilifyed on the fan forums mostly because it’s poppish nature and it’s true that Bruce hasn’t done too many of these. I think this is in it’s abnormality a great piece of his work from 2000s.

Girls in Their Summer Clothes tuo mieleen loppukevään, alkukesän ja ennenkaikkea juhannuksen 2010. Magic-albumin materiaali pohjautuu suurimmilta osin Yhdysvaltain poliittiseen tilanteeseen sekä tyytymättömyyteen George W. Bushin hallintoon. Seassa on kuitenkin tällainenkin laulu, joka lempeydessään erottui heti edukseen allekirjoittaneen korvissa. Niin kävi jollekulle muullekin: tämä biisi nimittäin voitti parhaan rock-biisin Grammyn vuonna 2009 ja oli ehdolla sarjassa Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance.
Sijalla 47 olleen Radio Nowheren kohdalla Magic-levyn soundeja tuli jo ruodittua. Girls in Their Summer Clothes ei ole aivan niin täyteen pakattu kuin sähisevä Radio Nowhere: tässä laulussa varsinkin jousisektio valtaa paikkansa. Melodiassa on vahvoja kaikuja 60-luvulta. ”Frankie’s diner”-sanoilla käynnistyvä väliosa on mielenkiintoinen poikkeus muun laulun struktuurista.
Tietyllä tapaa Springsteen tekee tämän laulun sanoituksessa paluuta 70-luvun tuotantoonsa. Suuria ei tapahdu, vaan kohtauksia kuvaillaan yksityiskohdin. Auringonlaskuisen kaupunkikuvan voi nähdä ensirivistä asti, kun kertoja tarkkailee ympäristöään. Katuvalot paistavat, rakastavaiset kulkevat ohi käsi kädessä, tuuli puhaltaa.

Pojan pallo kimmahtaa katuvalon räystäästä, pankin kello hohtaa ja kuistien valot sammuvat. Näillä tiedoilla voisi maalata jo maalauksen. Kaupunki kuitenkin on hereillä ja kertoja toteaa, että viime aikoina on ollut raskasta mutta kyllä tämä tästä lähtee. Mitä tässä on tapahtunut?

Seuraa se väliosa, joka hyppää yllättäviin sointuihin. Kaveri Frankien ravintola kaupunkin reunalla tarjoaa lohdutusta. ”Fluorescent” on melkoinen sana tunkea pop-biisiin. Tarjoilija Shaniquakin näkee, ettei päähenkilöllämme ole kaikki ihan hyvin, jokin vaivaa… Penni ajatuksista avaakin tarinan: nainen lähti ja viilsi haavan sydämeen. Nyt miehemme onkin lähtenyt kaupungille, jossa ”girls in their summer clothes pass me by”. Pelkkä vilkaisukin voisi pelastaa paljon.
Mahtava muuten se välisointu juuri ennen ”glance”-sanaa viimeisen säkeistön lopulla…
Tätä laulua on myös parjattu paljon fanifoorumeilla, ehkä liiallisen popmaisuutensa vuoksi. Eihän Bruce tällaisia ole hirveästi tehnytkään. Minusta tämä on poikkeavuudessaan hieno pala 2000-luvun tuotantoa.
