I Wanna Be With You, like Loose Ends on the place 44, dates back to the sessions for The River-album during the late 1970s. There was a lot of material created in those days and lot of it was left in the vaults although the album became a double one. One significant notion from the songs was that Bruce started to conciously replace the poprock standards from his live repertoaire with his own simple, often three-and-a-half-minute long songs. I Wanna Be With You is one of those.
Those so-called River rockers are not any rocket science. A few chords and lyrics often almost naive: this one's also like that. On the other hand the infatuation described in the lyrics is often alikely like painting castles in the air.

I Wanna Be With You, kuten myös listalla sijalla 44 ollut Loose Ends, juontaa juurensa The River-albumin sessioihin 70-80-lukujen taitteeseen. Tuolloinkin materiaalia syntyi paljon enemmän kuin olisi ollut vara käyttää, vaikka Riveristä lopulta tupla-LP tulikin. Yksi merkittävä elementti tuon levyn lauluissa on, että tuolloin Bruce alkoi tietoisesti korvata keikkaseteissä käytössä olleita rock-klassikoita omilla yksinkertaisilla kolmen ja puolen minuutin rock-lauluillaan, joihin I Wanna Be With Youkin lukeutuu.
Nuo niin kutsutut River-rokkarit eivät siis ole minkäänlaista rakettitiedettä miltään kantilta katsottuna. Muutaman soinnun rokkeja ja usein popilla tavalla naiiveja sanoituksia: myös tämä on sellainen. Toisaalta laulussa kuvailtu ihastuminenkin on pohjimmiltaan hyvinkin samankaltaisen pilvilinnojen maalailua…
