´´This is uh... This next song is a song about relationships, so....Anybody out there with a new boyfriend or a new girlfriend ? Anybody out there married ? Most of you guys know what I´m talking about.
Here´s a song like when you first meet somebody, you know, how everything´s great all the time and everything they say is brilliant and they always look so wonderful and....And I know you guys, you´re always putting on the aftershave lotion and stuff so then you smell real good....And if you wanna go out, you know, like, uh, ´What movie do you wanna go see ?´ ´Oh, honey, whatever you wanna go see....I don´t care if we stay home just as long as I´m with you´... And like, you know, you tell ´em that you love ´em and they say ´Oh, I bet that you said that to your other girlfriends´ and you say ´Oh yeah, but this time I really mean it´...yeah, everything´s great then, you´re making love all the time....Can´t stay away from each other...
Oh, but then you come back about six months later or a year later...and it´s like ´Are we going out tonight or do I have to sit here and look at your face all night ?´...´Are you gonna make love to me or do we have to wait for the full moon ?´...Hey, why does that happen? I don´t know, anyway... This is for all you lovers out there...” -I'm Goin' Downin spiikki, Giants Stadium, New Jersey 22.8.1985.
That's according to Bruce himself what's I'm Goin' Down is about. This one was also one my first personal favourites, because Born in the U.S.A. was one of the first albums I bought, of course. Right from the first listen this was a catchy one.
As a musical piece this doesn't do miracles: it's only four chords (A-E-F#m-D) and straight rock 'n' roll, but in this kind of boogie the E Street Band is unbeatable. The little nuances, saxophone solo and thickset beat are instantly recognizable.
Bruce squeezes the lyrics nicely in the above speech. At first it's beautiful to fall in love but then the feelings decline and that's make one wonder. There's almost a countryish twang in Bruce's vocal performance, making some lines sound almost confusing but working as well, the primary example being second verse's ”we come home early burning, burning in some fire fight”. During the last verse the memories of our narrator are the most harrowing: at the beginning the kisses used to make the other go wild but now the only goal seems to be to drive the partner down.
In I'm Goin' Down simple pop and rock have been united cleverly and this one surely works when played live although it was long gone from the setlists. I'm Goin' Down' is one those I'd very much like to hear on an E Street Band-show one day.
We sit in the car outside your house
I can feel the heat coming 'round
I go to put my arm around you
and you give me a look like I'm way out of bounds
well you let out one of your bored sighs
Well lately when I look into your eyes
I'm goin down
We get dressed up and we go out, baby, for the night
We come home early burning, burning in some fire fight
I'm sick and tired of you setting me up
Setting me up just to knock-a knock-a knock-a me down
I pull you close but when we kiss I can feel a doubt
I remember back when we started
My kisses used to turn you inside out
I used to drive you to work in the morning
Friday night I'd drive you all around
You used to love to drive me wild
But lately girl you get your kicks from just driving me down

Siinäpä Brucen omin sanoin se, mistä I'm Goin' Downissa on kyse. Tämäkin oli ensimmäisiä omia suosikkeja, sillä Born in the U.S.A. oli ensimmäisten omien Springsteen-levyjen joukossa, tottakai.
Springsteenin laulusuorituksessa on liki countrahtava twangi, joka saa jotkin rivit kuulostamaan hämmentäviltä mutta toimivilta, malliesimerkkinä kakkossäkeistön ”we come home early burning, burning in some fire fight”.
I'm Goin' Down on yksi niistä, jonka tahtoisin vielä kuulla E Street Band-keikalla jonain päivänä.
