Radio Nowhere is the opening track from 2007’s album Magic. The album’s sound politics don’t please many old Bruce-fans: it’s true that the compressed and loud overall sound differs from everything else Springsteen has released. But for me it has became an internal part of this album which has quietly rose pretty high on my opinions.
The sounds and the song’s musical sole get the whole song fizzing like a shuffled hornet’s nest. The guitars ring in a rarely big wall of sound and Weinberg’s drums are mixed more upfront than usually. Big Man’s saxophone solo has been doubled with Nils Lofgren’s overdriven guitar: here’s a trick, with all the filters and other effects, that Bruce used to get C’s saxophone sound modern but still it’s own, inimitable self.
Magic is a record that fundamentally criticizes George W. Bush’s administration. As an opening track Radio Nowhere hints in this direction but it still applies universally and even in musical culture. No one seems to hear or even listen.

The narrator feels like he’s going around in circles: isolation isn’t far away. Everything’s changed and only remnants are left from the past. “Dancing down a dark hole” refers to Bruce’s own song Dancing in the Dark and isn’t left alone as a reference to his own past in this song.

There’s a desperate search for something to hang on to, even a rhythm, but it doesn’t seem to be found. What about thousand guitars or pounding drums? Or a situation in which different tongues spoke one common musical language? But there’s no answer.

The third verse recycles the same theme. The narrator can’t find a connection to anyone, even “you”. From this verse two music-cultural references can be found. First is once again to Boss’s own repertoire: “I was driving through the misty rain” is an echo of 1984 and Downbound Train, in which Bruce sang ”nights as I sleep I hear that whistle whining / I feel her kiss in the misty rain”. Immediately following is a nod towards Elvis and his Mystery Train. As the song fades away the narrator stays to yell to get some sign of life: “I just want to feel some rhythm”.

The tours following the albums Magic and Working on a Dream (meaning years 2007-2009) Radio Nowhere was a standard on the set lists. On the Magic Tour it often worked as an opening song of the evening showing Bruce and the Band being still relevant and hard rocking. On the next two tours in the years 2012-2014 it wasn’t anymore a inseparable part of the gigs but still emerged every now and then to liven up the evening’s drama of the arc.

Radio Nowhere avaa vuoden 2007 Magic-levyn. Kyseisen albumin soundimaailma ei miellytä mekkalassaan monia vanhoja Bruce-faneja: totta on, että kompressoitu ja meluisa yleissoundi poikkeaa kaikesta muusta mitä Springsteen on julkaissut. Itselleni siitä on tullut kuitenkin yllättävänkin keskeinen osa tätä albumia, joka on kuin vaivihkaa noussut aika korkealle omilla listoillani.
Soundit ja biisin musiikillinen pohja saavat koko kappaleen sähisemään kuin sohittu ampiaispesä. Kitaroita soi harvinaisen suuressa vallissa ja Weinbergin rummut ovat hieman enemmän esillä kuin perinteisesti. Big Manin saksofonisoolo on tuplattu pohjalta Nils Lofgrenin särötetyllä kitaralla: tämä on yhdessä kaikkien käytettyjen filttereiden ja muiden efektien kanssa tyylikeino, jolla Bruce tahtoi saada C:n saksofonin kuulostamaan modernilta mutta silti omalta itseltään.
Magic-levy on pohjimmiltaan kovasti Bushin hallintoa kritisoivaa materiaalia. Heti avausraitana Radio Nowhere vihjailee siihen suuntaan mutta pätee kuitenkin myös universaalimmin jopa musiikkikulttuuriin. Kukaan ei tunnu kuulevan eikä kuuntelevan.

Kertojasta tuntuu kuin kiertäisi kehää: eristäytyminen ei ole kaukana. Meininki on muuttunut ja menneestä ovat jäljellä vain jäänteet. ”Dancing down a dark hole” rivi viitannee Brucen omaan Dancing in the Darkiin, eikä jää ainoaksi tällaiseksi viittaukseksi tässä laulussa.

Epätoivoisesti etsitään jotain mihin tarttua, edes rytmiä. Sitä ei vain meinaa löytyä. Entä tuhansia kitaroita tai jyskyttäviä rumpuja? Tai haaveillaan tilanteesta, jossa eri kielet puhuisivat yhtä yhteistä (musiikin?) kieltä? Mutta vastausta ei kuulu.

Kolmas säkeistö kierrättää samaa teemaa. Yhteyttä kehenkään, edes ”sinuun”, ei löydy. Tästä säkeistöstä löytyy kaksikin musiikkikulttuurillista viittausta. Ensimmäinen on jälleen omaan tuotantoon: ”I was driving through the misty rain” on kaiku vuoden 1984 Downbound Trainista, jossa lauletaan ”nights as I sleep I hear that whistle whining / I feel her kiss in the misty rain”. Heti perässä tulee nyökkäys ikisuosikki Elvikseen ja hänen Mystery Trainiinsa. Laulun feidautuessa pois kertoja jää edelleen huutamaan jonkin elonmerkin perään. ”I just want to feel some rhythm”.

Magic- ja Working on a Dream-albumeita seuranneilla kiertueilla (eli vuosina 2007-2009) Radio Nowhere oli livesettien vakiokamaa. Magic-rundilla se toimi usein jopa koko listan ensimmäisenä lauluna kuten albumillakin osoittaen välittömästi että Bruce ja bändi pysyvät yhä relevantteina ja rokkaavina. Seuraavilla kahdella kiertueella eli vuosina 2012-2014 se ei enää kuulunut erottamattomana osana keikkakattaukseen mutta ilmaantui silloin tällöin piristämään loppusetin draamankaarta.
